RSS User Guide
What is RSS?
- RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a format for delivering regularly changing web content. RSS is a text-based format, a type of XML. The most common use for RSS files is for news and other reverse-chronologically ordered websites like our statewide job listings. Instead of visiting Jobs.mt.gov to find the newest job postings, you simply subscribe to the RSS and let them come to you.
- You can access RSS content with newer versions of web browsers like Internet Explorer or Firefox, and on many handheld and mobile Internet devices. Set up this way, you can automatically see the newest content posted to the Statewide or Local Jobs RSS feed.
How to Access this RSS Feed
- Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox 2 or newer: These versions of the popular web browsers have built-in RSS reader capability. If you have either one, just click the
subscribe to link, then you can read the feed, and subscribe to it (in Internet Explorer you click a "Subscribe to this feed" link, in Firefox you hit a button to add it to your "Live Bookmarks"). - If your computer has an older web browser like Internet Explorer version 6.0, you can set up a RSS reader program on your computer.
- Non-browser RSS reader programs: Hundreds are available for all platforms and systems. Here is a list from the Open Directory. After installing a reader program on your computer, you would do a "Subscribe" operation and give as the feed URL http://wsd.dli.mt.gov/rss/statewide.xml or http://wsd.dli.mt.gov/rss/[localtownname].xml
